Oliver Labs will give a talk on Wednesday, 9th of May 2018 within the series Dresdner Mathematisches Seminar (DMS) with the Title:

3D printed mathematical sculptures 

The exciting history of three-dimensional models, which are based on higher mathematics, started more than 150 years ago. In recent years, this story gains new meaning and vitality via the application of modern technologies: today, mathematical objects may be produced with greatest precision with the help of computer software and 3D printers.

The talk presents a selection of mathematical models and their mathematical and historical background. A focus is set on the so-called cubic surfaces, which played an important role in the 19th century during the development of algebraic geometry and also in the history of mathematical 3D objects. Recently, a series of 45 of such models, created by the speaker, has become part of the collection of the TU Dresden.

The speaker aims to present the main ideas and stories behind the mathematical sculptures in an intuitive and visual way, such that the talk will be interesting both for students and for professional mathematicians.
