Bakteriopolis wins photo competition at International Microorganism Day

The science communication project Bakteriopolis at TU Dresden was awarded the overall prize in the international photo competition at the International Microorganism Day 2025. The award-winning image combines a photograph of a Bacillus subtilis strain with a night-time shot of Berlin. The photo collage by Matthias Frank, a doctoral student at the Chair of General Microbiology at TU Dresden, compares the complex structures of bacterial cell clusters with urban infrastructure. The collage combines the biofilm image with the picture of Berlin photographed by Chris Hadfield on board the International Space Station (ISS), vividly linking science and art.
