100 Years GAMM – A scientific art exhibition
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics), a scientific art exhibition accompanied the GAMM annual conference from 30 May to 2 June 2023 in the lecture hall centre of the TU Dresden. The Dresden artists Wolfram Neumann and Denise Walther showed their interpretation of the interplay between applied mathematics and mechanics together with objects and installations by Prof. Daniel Lordick, Dr. Marco Salvalaglio and Prof. Axel Voigt from the Faculty of Mathematics, which combine art, science and technology. These works were complemented by exhibits from the historical collections of TU Dresden, mathematical models, gear models and calculating machines, as well as a new exhibit from the Erlebnisland Mathematik.
For the exhibition, the seminar room 304 was transformed into a gallery, which was accessible not only to the more than 1000 conference participants, but also to the public. At the midissage on 1 June 23, Prof. Axel Voigt, who curated the exhibition, guided the more than 100 visitors through the exhibition and presented for the first time the project "Airport" by Anton Ginzburg, who worked together with TUD scientists from the in 2021 as part of an artist residency at the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden. The visual artwork, created in collaboration with Prof. Stefan Gumhold and Prof. Axel Voigt, is an immersive, programmed environment which is based on plaster reliefs, which in turn represent various combinations of sixteen freely combinable 3D modules that visualise data from air traffic. Formally, Ginzburg was inspired by Karl-Heinz Adler's and Friedrich Kracht's formstone systems from the 1960s, which he studied intensively during his residency. The individual "Airport" modules are thus sculptural studies that tie in with the tradition of formal experiments of modernism and at the same time are rooted in concrete data.
About the GAMM:
The GAMM (Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics) sees itself as an interdisciplinary network for researchers in applied mathematics and mechanics and their sub- and neighbouring fields. It was founded in 1922 by Ludwig Prandtl and Richard von Mises. The GAMM has played a major role in the progress of hydro- and aerodynamics, solid mechanics as well as numerical and industrial mathematics. The office is located at the TUD Faculty of Civil Engineering.
