Episode 16: Beer - From Liquid Bread to Modern Craft Beer
In Germany, Beer Day is celebrated on April 23 — and not without reason. On this date in 1516, the Purity Law was issued, a regulation that still applies today and stipulates which ingredients may be used for beer in Germany. In this episode, presenter Peer Kittel and student Jule Wäntig get to the bottom of the history of beer and ask the question of how such a wide variety of beers can be created from just four ingredients. Who better to answer this than food chemist Prof. Thomas Henle, who treats beer brewing as an important part of his lecture on food chemistry and with whom the students even complete a compulsory internship thereon. An exciting conversation with lots of facts about Germany's most popular alcoholic drink.
