Episode 3: Best-before date - Should it be abolished for some foods?
German Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir has described the best-before date on long-life products such as rice, tea and honey as "completely pointless". He argues that abolishing this regulation could help to ensure that fewer of these products end up in the bin simply because their best-before date has expired. Does this really make sense? Can certain foods really not spoil? And how do you actually preserve food? Moderator Peer Kittel and student Jule talk to food chemist Prof. Thomas Henle from TU Dresden about these and other questions.
