"Lighthouses" of Internationalization
At regular intervals, the TU Dresden awards decentralized partnerships, networks and programs as "Lighthouse". The projects selected here comprise international relations and activities with a TUD-wide significance. They are characterized by a subject-specific orientation, so that they stand as "Lighthouses" for the quality, breadth and diversity of the TU Dresden in internationalization. In the first round of the 2021 call, a total of 22 initiatives out of 78 submissions were awarded for their valuable contribution to the international position of TU Dresden. Among them are 2 projects from the area of mathematics and natural sciences, which were awarded as "lighthouse" in the categories "partnerships" and "country networks":
The area of Mathematics and Natural Sciences received the "Lighthouse" award in 2021 for its activity "Japan":
The Stellenbosch University (South Africa) – one of South Africa's leading universities with an excellent reputation worldwide – is an important partner of the School of Science and the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research. For both sides, this partnership has great strategic relevance beyond mere mobilities.
- The research-related stays of the Phd students aim at working on qualification projects under mutual professorial supervision and form a basis for further cooperation activities and their inter-institutional continuation.
- The digital appearances and, in some cases, stays by university teachers are embedded in different teaching formats, with the approach of tandem teaching (joint teaching by guest and host) being tested. Students from both universities can complete these.
- The exchange of non-scientific staff helps to launch the collaboration on important current topics such as Big Data, governance and monitoring strategic internationalization.
The regular exchange between both universities promotes the sustainable development of the partnership.

In 2014, Osaka University was declared a strategic partner of the School of Science, TU Dresden.
Since then, Japanese and Dresden scientists have generated a large number of joint activities, also beyond the borders of Osaka and the Kansai Region. In the meantime, about 20 universities and research institutes from several regions of Japan have been included in the multifaceted collaboration strands. Institutes from the DRESDEN-concept alliance are also integrated in the joint projects developed at the faculties of TU Dresden, especially the Helmholtz Centre Dresden Rossendorf. As the variety of formats suggests, all relevant academic target groups are included in the partnership work: students, teachers, researchers and administrative staff. With a view to future activities, this sets the course for continuity, sustainability and commitment on both sides.
A significant instrument of networking and partnership development is the interdisciplinary symposium iJaDe, which takes place every three years, alternately in Dresden and in Japan.
