Mentoring Program
Table of contents
The Faculty of Mathematics’ mentoring program is primarily aimed at first-year students in the Bachelor’s programmes in Mathematics and Business Mathematics, as well as students in the teacher education programmes for secondary schools (GY), vocational schools (BBS), middle schools, and elementary schools with mathematics as a subject.
As part of the mentoring program, you can join a mentee group right at the beginning of your studies. This group consists of fellow students and at least one student from a higher semester (the mentor). You will meet with this group regularly during your first year, giving you the opportunity to talk in a relaxed setting about your experiences in your studies, discuss any problems you encounter, and receive tips and tricks about studying directly from your mentors. Most importantly, the program gives you the chance to get to know fellow students from the very beginning with whom you can organise study sessions and leisure activities.
If needed, faculty members are also available to support you in the program. The program is rounded out by several mini-workshops that are open to all first-year students. Please check the OPAL course listed below for details on the schedule and structure.
Schedule (as of 02 September 2025)
In addition to four workshops held throughout the winter semester, meetings in mentor groups will take place to help you get settled in at the faculty:
Workshop “Math Myth-Buster”
Monday, 20 October 2025, 5th double period (2:50 – 4:20 p.m.), Room Z21/250
In a relaxed setting, you will get to know your fellow students and faculty members, and you will have the chance to exchange ideas with instructors and advanced students about studying and life in Dresden.
Workshop “Taking and Processing Lecture Notes”
Monday, 27 October 2025, 5th double period (2:50 – 4:20 p.m.), Room Z21/250
Here you will receive guidance on questions such as: Should I take notes during lectures or just listen? Are there tricks to taking notes more effectively? Am I expected to understand everything in real time during lectures? How can I best review the material afterwards?
Workshop “Solving and Writing Up Homework”
Monday, 17 November 2025, 5th double period (2:50 – 4:20 p.m.), Room Z21/250
Here you will receive guidance on questions such as: How should I approach math problems? Should I work alone or with others? Do I have to be able to solve the problems immediately? How do I write my solutions correctly in mathematical form?
