Which students may take part in a professional internship?
Students in the Master's programmes in Technomathematics and Mathematics in Business and Economics can choose up to two professional internships as elective modules. The official names of the modules are “Mathematical Internship” and “Research and Business Internship” (abbreviated as Math-Ma-MI and Math-Ma-RBI).
Is the internship compulsory?
No, it is an elective module.
What is the time frame of the internship?
The minimum length of time required for the internship is 160 hours (for one elective module) or 320 hours (for both elective modules). This corresponds to four weeks or eight weeks for a full-time internship position. If both internship modules are chosen, either two different shorter internships or one longer internship may be recognised.
When must the professional internship be carried out?
Both internships are scheduled for the third semester of the Master's programme. However, they may also be completed at other times (e.g. during the semester break before the start of the Master's programme, divided into several parts, etc.).
What are the requirements for an internship? What needs to be considered at the start of an internship?
The prerequisite is that a suitable internship position has been found and that someone has been designated as contact and supervisor. An internship position is suitable if it involves practical tasks related to mathematical activities. If in doubt, please consult the Internship Co-ordinator.
Do I have to register for the internship with the Examinations Office/Internship Co-ordinator?
No, registration for the internship is not required; credit points are only given after the internship has ended. However, it is recommended that you consult with the faculty's Internship Coordinator before beginning.
What needs to be considered at the end of the internship?
At the end of the internship, the intern must prepare an internship report, which must be signed by the internship supervisor. This report should contain information on the duration and content of the internship as well as the main activities. The form of the report can be freely chosen; it should generally have a length of one to two A4 pages. For the internship to be recognised, the report and the internship certificate form must be submitted to the Internship Co-ordinator. The report and form must at the latest be submitted by the end of the semester following the internship
What are the objectives of the professional internship?
The study regulations specify the following qualification objectives: "Students gain insight into practical tasks, processes and framework conditions associated with mathematical activities. They become familiar with possible career fields, expand their existing knowledge in practice and learn how to apply it. They are able to reflect on the work experience they have gained and combine it with the knowledge they have acquired in a key area. Students will have the ability to take on new tasks, find their way in unfamiliar environments and fit into unknown teams. Their communication and self-organisation skills will be strengthened."
At which companies/institutions can the professional internship be carried out?
The internship can be carried out at a company, but also at a research institution or university (except for the Faculty of Mathematics at Dresden University of Technology). What counts is that practical tasks related to mathematical activities are undertaken.
Where can I find potential internships?
- Search for internship opportunities online, e.g. at www.meinpraktikum.de, https://de.linkedin.com/, at Google, using the search filter “Jobs”.
- Contact companies directly.
- Sign up for the mailing list by sending an email with the subject line “subscribe” to this address. This mailing list is used to send out offers for career entry, internships and similar opportunities related to mathematics.
- An internal internship database is currently being set up. Please contact the Internship Co-ordinator for access.
Can the internship be completed in stages/parallel to my studies?
Yes, the internship can also be completed in several stages or parallel to your studies. In this case, it is important that a single contact person or supervisor is available for the entire internship. If the internship is to last longer than two semesters or if there are other special circumstances, please discuss this with the Internship Co-ordinator.
Will I receive a payment for the internship?
Payment/remuneration for the internship can be agreed upon directly with the institution where the internship takes place. Credit points earned for carrying out the internship are not affected by a possible remuneration.
