Dr. Marco Salvalaglio starts a new Emmy Noether Research Group @ DCMS and IWR

Dr. Marco Salvalaglio will head an Emmy Noether funded research group at the Institute of Scientific Computing (IWR) and the Dresden Center of Computational Materials Science (DCMS) of TU-Dresden. This research group will specialize in mesoscale material modeling and simulations. It will be funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with a ~1.5 million euro grant for six years. The research activities will begin in early 2021.
Dr. Marco Salvalaglio's research focuses on the modeling and simulation of properties/evolution of crystalline materials by continuum and mesoscale approaches, mostly using continuum elasticity theory, phase-field and phase-field crystal models. He studied mechanical properties of semiconductor structures and developed theoretical tools to study the plasticity onset in vertical nano- and microstructures. Moreover, he extensively worked on the modeling of crystalline systems to understand and control the evolution of complex three-dimensional nanostructures as those involved in heteroepitaxy and solid-state dewetting phenomena. In close connections with experiments, his simulation results either helped explain observed phenomena or suggested novel approaches for bottom-up fabrication of nanostructures. With the projects funded by the Emmy Noether Programme, entitled "A mesoscale framework for the modeling of defects and interfaces in crystals", he aims to bridge length scales enabling novel, large-scale investigations of extended defects, grain boundaries, heterostructures, and microstructures, retaining atomistic details. To achieve this goal, a computationally-efficient collection of coarse-graining approaches based on the so-called phase-field crystal model will be developed and applied.
Dr. Marco Salvalaglio studied Condensed-Matter Physics and completed his Ph.D. in Materials Science at the Materials Science Department of the University of Milano-Bicocca. Since 2016 he has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Scientific Computing of TU-Dresden, firstly joined with a two-years Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship. In 2019 he was a Visiting Researcher at the Aalto University (Espoo, FI) and a Junior Visiting Fellow at the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Studies (HK). Since the beginning of 2020, in recognition of his independent and successful research activity, he has been associated as a full member of the DCMS.
The Emmy Noether Programme gives exceptionally qualified early career researchers the chance to qualify for the post of professor at a university by leading an independent junior research group for a period of six years.
