Prof. Dr. Markus Schmidtchen Appointed to the Chair of “Applied Mathematics”
Effective October 1, 2026, Prof. Dr. Markus Schmidtchen was appointed to the Chair of “Applied Mathematics” at the Institute for Scientific Computing.
Prof. Schmidtchen earned his Ph.D. in 2019 at Imperial College London under Prof. J. A. Carrillo. He then conducted research as an FSMP postdoctoral fellow at the Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions at Sorbonne Université in Paris. He was previously appointed to a junior professorship at the Institute for Scientific Computing at TU Dresden, effective October 1, 2020. He has now successfully completed his tenure-track review.
In his research, Prof. Schmidtchen combines the modeling and simulation of complex systems—such as pattern formation in living systems—with modern methods of partial differential equation analysis. His work focuses on nonlocal models, particle systems, and their phase transitions. He also addresses these topics in his teaching.
Prof. Schmidtchen played a key role in shaping the Mathematics Department’s mentoring program, which supports first-year students as they transition from high school to college. He is also committed to promoting the diversity of mathematics as a scientific discipline within society and is particularly active in the department’s efforts to support high school students.
We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. Schmidtchen on his appointment and look forward to continuing our successful collaboration.
