Specialization Solid State and Materials Physics
At the IFMP, we conduct research and teach in the field of solid-state and materials physics. This extensive subject area can be divided into three categories:
-
Phenomena (PH) that occur in complex and correlated matter and can lead to new functionalities in applications. Examples include superconductivity, magnetism, surface and interface states, entangled and topological electronic states.
-
Materials (MA) in which the aforementioned phenomena occur. The focus is thus on specific materials and their production. So-called quantum materials, in which quantum effects dominate and lead to novel states of matter, are of particular interest.
-
Methods (ME) The investigation of new physical phenomena in quantum materials requires the most advanced experimental methods, whereby the materials and phenomena are also specifically controlled by external parameters such as pressure, temperature, magnetic fields, light, etc.
The specific lectures within the specialization in solid state and materials physics are listed in the following tables for the winter and summer semesters.
- VW: Lecture for Bachelor and Master (can be chosen as an examination topic)
- VWm: Lecture recommended for Master (can be chosen as an examination topic)
- VF: Optional (not an examination topic)
- SWS X/Y: X SWS lecture, Y SWS exercise

Recommendations for the lectures:
- Bachelor's Program: One of the core topics Magnetism 1 or Superconductivity 1
- Master's Program: The core topics Magnetism 2 and Superconductivity 2. Additionally, one more lecture from the PH (Phenomena) category and one from either the ME (Methods) or MA (Materials) category each semester. This totals 3 lectures per semester.
As an additional supplement, lectures from other institutes, particularly in the field of theoretical solid-state physics, can be beneficial. Please feel free to discuss this with us.
