The 2019 retreat of the ct.qmat Quantum Matter Academy
The first retreat of the ct.qmat Quantum Matter Academy (QMA) took place from 08.-10.10.2019 in Meißen, near Dresden. It was the kick-off cross-institutional event for the young researchers of the cluster to get to know each other.
Via scientific talks and poster sessions the participants were introduced to the broad research variety generated by the cooperation of the two universities Dresden (TUD) and Würzburg (JMU) as well as collaborating institutes. On top of that, the young researchers were able to get an overview of the cluster's infrastructure and its diverse opportunities in terms of personal development and support.
In between, there was time to explore the enchanted city of Meißen, enjoy cultural offers and hang out in a cafe or pub.
On Thursday the young researchers elected their QMA representatives, who represent early career researchers in the cluster’s Steering Committee as well as in the Flex Fund Selection Committee, where they have a voice in reviewing processes for seed funding (funding for first independent projects on the young research level).
The representatives for the Steering Committee are: Dr. Kavita Mehlawat (IFW Dresden) & Philipp Kagerer (JMU). The representatives for the Flex Fund Selection Committee are: Dr. Louis Veyrat (JMU) & Tilman Schwemmer (JMU).
Three days of scientific exchange, discussions, and social activities passed by quickly but strengthened the contact and collaboration between the members of the two universities and developed a team spirit among the approximately 70 attending early career researchers of the cluster, which established a basis where new ideas can flourish.
Thanks to everyone who spent a lot of time and commitment to organize this meeting. It was fun and we are looking forward to the next QMA retreat!
