The topics of this project are the search for novel frustrated materials, their targeted synthesesand their chemical modification. The focus will especially be laid on geometrically frustrated lattice structures in systems with considerable chemical variability as well as ions with strong spin-orbit coupling. Three families of compounds have been identified as promising and will be taken into account as starting points, namely cubic ullmannites with 3d magnetic ions, derivatives of U3S5, and 3d-5f mixed compounds UMO4. The uranium compounds promise an interesting interplay between localized and itinerant magnetism in the presence of frustration.
