X. Schmalz: Cognitive processes in reading across languages

Abstract
The cognition of reading is intrinsically tied to the language and orthography in which we read. Still, we know relatively little how the cognitive processes underlying reading differ across languages. From a theoretical perspective, cross-linguistic reading research provides a key to understanding the interactions between language-specific features and universal cognitive structures. From a practical perspective, understanding which language- and orthography-level features facilitate or impede reading acquisition has implications for improving reading instructions and diagnosis and remediation of developmental dyslexia across languages. In the current talk, I present studies investigating reading across languages using computational, experimental, and observational data. Across studies, the results show that features of the orthography affect cognitive learning and reading processes. Many open questions remain, however, relating to cross-linguistic differences between non-European orthographies.
