New study on empathy and perspective-taking in narcissism
Narcissism is often associated with a lack of empathy. In a previously published study, Emanuel Jauk and colleagues used psychological and neuroscientific methods to examine empathy and perspective taking in narcissism in 140 people. They found that although empathy is reduced in everyday life, this is not due to a general inability, but rather to motivational factors. Perspective taking is also reduced in everyday life, but is not impaired under laboratory conditions when psychological or physiological levels are taken into account. The results argue against a general lack of interpersonal skills and point to the importance of motivational aspects.
