New review article on neural models of emotion processing in affective disorders
A new article by Katharina Förster, Marcel Kurtz, Annika Konrad and Philipp Kanske has recently been published in the journal Zeitschrift für klinische Psychologie und Psychotherapie. In this narrative review article, an overview on how neural models of emotion processing in affective disorders can inform clinical practice is provided.
First, the authors describe the neural correlates of emotional reactivity and emotion regulation as very well-studied facets of emotion processing in affective disorders. Second, they address the neural correlates of social emotion processing, i.e., the processing of shame, guilt, and also empathy and Theory of Mind, which are not as well studied in affective disorders. Finally, based on their summary of neural changes in emotional reactivity, emotion regulation, and social emotion processing, the authors propose two treatment approaches: Emotion Regulation Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.
