Background:
In building industry digitization of planning and construction processes prevails under the term building information modeling (BIM).
This IT-supported method promises better performance over the whole life span of a building by fast access to detailed building information and an efficient cooperation of all involved parties. The increasing establishment of BIM in international building industry indicates that in near future this method will also prevail in germany. So far BIM has mainly been applied in big architectural offices and construction companies. To date craftpeople rarely work with BIM, although this method promises benefits for their business.
To prepare german craftspeople for changing work processes due to BIM a multimedia training was already developed in the project eWorkBau (more information: http://ework-bau.de/), which provides an introduction into BIM and and working with digitial building models. The training was tested and evaluated in five different chambers of crafts with craftspeople of different disciplines. Based on the positive feedback the follow-up project BIM@work was initiated. In this project, clear and practical learning material shall be developed on the basis of an in-depth analysis of a crafts enterprise that has already worked with BIM for many years. These materials can be used by other craftspeople to establish the BIM method in their own companies.
