Wanted: Science Communicators - Earth Science Slam in the Church of our Lady ("Frauenkirche")

Together with the "Frauenkirche" Foundation Dresden, the Dresden Technical Collections are organizing the Earth Science Slam in March 2023. The focus is on climate, environmental and sustainability research, and the imposing Dresden "Frauenkirche" venue is quite unusual for a science slam. Anyone interested in taking part in the slam can apply to the Technical Collections now.

The reason for the planned Earth Science Slam is the art installation Gaia by British artist Luke Jerram. From March 4th to March 26th, Jerram will hang a 7 meter globe in the church. The globe, clad in high-resolution NASA images and illuminated from within, has been on display in many places in Europe, Asia, Australia and America over the past three years and has fascinated hundreds of thousands of visitors. With his installation, Jerram would like to provide a view of our planet as astronauts have repeatedly described it as a deeply felt experience since the beginning of space travel.

The Earth Science Slam will be part of an extensive supporting program. Simon Hauser, who is a successful nationwide science communicator and has also moderated several science slams in Dresden, could be won over to moderate the event.

We are now looking for post-graduates and post-docs, and also master's students who are interested in popular science communication, who want to present their research area in an entertaining way in a maximum of 10 minutes and who would like to face the competition of the Earth Science Slam. Contributions from historical environmental research would also be particularly exciting. The participants receive coaching from Simon Hauser and there is of course a small prize for the winners.
