Open Construction Site Day Delights Numerous Visitors
The Smart Mobility Lab (SML) open construction site day in Schwarzkollm on June 28, 2026, was a resounding success. Despite summer temperatures exceeding 40 °C, numerous interested visitors took the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the research facility under construction and learn about the future of mobility.
The event officially kicked off with welcoming remarks by Torsten Ruban-Zeh, mayor of Hoyerswerda, and Udo Witschas, district administrator of the Bautzen district. Both emphasized the importance of the Smart Mobility Lab as a forward-looking project for the region and as a key driver of structural change in Lusatia.
Following this, visitors gained fascinating insights into the research activities of the participating institutes during guided tours of the grounds and at various information booths. Among other things, projects in the fields of automated and connected driving, robotics, artificial intelligence, and innovative aviation and drone technologies were presented. Scientists were on hand to answer questions and engage in one-on-one conversations, vividly illustrating how the mobility of tomorrow will be shaped.
The high level of interest and the numerous stimulating conversations underscored just how firmly the Smart Mobility Lab is already established in the region and the high expectations associated with the new research site. With its unique infrastructure, the SML will enable interdisciplinary research in the fields of automated driving and flying, intelligent transportation systems, robotics, and digital technologies, thereby setting new standards in European mobility research.
Special thanks go to all visitors, the participating institutes, and the many volunteers who contributed to the event’s success. The construction site day impressively demonstrated the potential of the Smart Mobility Lab and the high level of interest in jointly shaping the mobility of tomorrow.
