The application phase for the new academic year of the model degree program in human medicine at the Chemnitz Medical Campus (MEDiC) of TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD) is now open. The MEDiC model degree program is once again paving the way for aspiring doctors who want to improve healthcare delivery over the long term, particularly in rural areas. Interested applicants can apply via the online portal between 1 and 30 April 2026. Excellent medical education in southwestern Saxony The MEDiC model degree program, established in 2020, is run by TUD in close cooperation with Chemnitz Hospital. The program aims to train the next generation of medical professionals in the region, addressing the long-term physician shortage in southwestern Saxony. Prof. Martin Wolz, Medical Director of Chemnitz Hospital, highlights the benefits of this close partnership: “As a maximum care hospital, we offer students an extremely broad spectrum, ranging from specialized high-performance medicine to close integration with outpatient care. Our goal is to provide future physicians with excellent professional training and inspire them to care for the people and the region of southwestern Saxony.” The network is supported by additional regional healthcare partners. Through this collaboration, students gain insights into clinical practice early in their studies and become familiar with different healthcare delivery systems. An innovation platform for future-focused medicine The MEDiC model degree program provides students with a high-quality education that prepares them for the challenges of modern medicine. A key feature is the close integration of theory and practice. Students participate in patient care early on and learn to apply scientific findings confidently in the increasingly digital healthcare environment. "With each new application cycle, it becomes increasingly clear how much MEDiC has grown in such a short time. Together with our partners, we are doing everything we can to develop this program into a cornerstone of medical education in southwestern Saxony and beyond," explains Prof. Esther Troost, Dean of the TUD Faculty of Medicine. The success of this approach is evident in the first graduating class. Students who started in 2020 finished the theoretical phase of the program in October 2025 and are now completing their clinical year on site. Prof. Klaus Zöphel, the Dean of the MEDiC model program, views this as validation of their efforts: "Many of our first MEDiC students are completing their practical year at Chemnitz Hospital, where they are directly involved in patient care. This confirms the success of our program. MEDiC combines theoretical excellence with early clinical experience in a modern learning environment. We are training a new generation of medical professionals who stand out for their social and digital skills, and they are demonstrating the value of this practice-oriented education for southwestern Saxony." The curriculum includes organ-system-based, practice-oriented instruction across 32 areas of expertise, including health services research, public health, medical informatics, and health systems science. Digital teaching methods, interdisciplinary learning, and structured mentoring programs support students throughout all ten semesters. MEDiC helps attract young medical professionals to southwestern Saxony in the long term and strengthen healthcare delivery, especially in rural areas.
