The November 2022 Alumna of the Month is an expert in Biotechnology
Nadine Schmieder-Galfe has three academic degrees, manages two biotech start-ups and established the Dresden Summer School ten years ago. At 18, she set out to “make biotechnology big in Saxony.” After graduating from the Molecular Biotechnology Bachelor’s degree program, she pursued an international Master’s in Molecular Bioengineering. Not ready to resign herself to the fact that many research findings are not developed into medications, treatments or diagnostic medical devices to be reintroduced to society, she started the DIU Master’s degree program in Economics and Law while working at the same time. Later on, while working in a research group on bone metastases at the University Hospital Dresden, she founded her own company, ZELLMECHANIK DRESDEN GmbH. The TUD spin-off produces and sells a research device that explores and detects the mechanical properties of biological cells in real time. Since 2020, she has mostly focused her energies on a second TUD spin-off. “Of course founding companies and working freelance bear great risk,” she acknowledges. “But entrepreneurship is awesome! Life itself is risky – building an enterprise is no riskier than just living.”
