Support for international students: SZD participates in the EDI:TUD project

Since January 1, 2021, TU Dresden has been running the model project "Successful - Digital - Integrated: Studying at TU Dresden (EDI:TUD)". The goal is to support international students in their studies and thereby facilitate their integration at TU Dresden. The project initially started at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Institute for Lightweight Construction (ILK). We as the Writing Center also support the project. Ulrike Samuelsson from SZD is responsible for the collaboration and answered some questions about the project and the role of the Writing Center in this interview.
Why does the Writing Center cooperate with the EDI project?
With the model project EDI:TUD, the TU Dresden, as a globally oriented university, wants to contribute to the improvement of the welcoming culture for international students and to further develop the cosmopolitan campus. Since the inception of the Writing Center in 2016, these guidelines have also been the basis for the conception of our formats, which is why all offers are aimed at all students - national and international - as well as their teachers.
The Writing Center can support the EDI:TUD project well with its existing offers such as writing consultation and develop new formats together with the respective faculties or institutes.
How does the Writing Center support students in the EDI project?
In 2021, the model project at the Institute for Lightweight Construction (ILK) entered its pilot phase and is to be transferred to other faculties of the TU Dresden in the future. Since there has been a growing number of international students at the ILK for several years, the institute would like to adapt the interaction in everyday study life to the new challenges through various project measures.
Specifically, we support the EDI project at the ILK through short-, medium- and long-term measures for international students and their teachers, such as basic workshops on academic writing, the development of handouts and guidelines for writing projects, and writing advice for international students.
Why is the EDI project needed?
For almost all students, studying, and especially the start of their studies, means a major change from the everyday life they were used to, which is associated with many new challenges. If this change then takes place in a new, often unfamiliar culture and language and without the familiar social network, it is not uncommon for difficulties to arise. In order for this to be above all a positive experience from which, in the best case, all parties involved - such as the international students, their fellow students and teachers, their home university as well as the TU Dresden - benefit, projects such as EDI:TUD, which accompany students on their study path, facilitate integration and improve academic success, are very important. The SZD can make an important contribution to living interculturality in everyday university life with its diverse offers and formats around academic writing.
