Making the city a safe place to commute and enjoy a high quality of life: TU Dresden supports "Pedestrian and Cycling Initiative"
TU Dresden supports the citizens' petition of the “Dresden Pedestrian and Cycling Initiative". This initiative is committed to a city with safe traffic conditions and a high quality of life. The initiative wants to embed this goal in city's policy with a citizens' petition and is calling for concrete measures for a safe, attractive and accessible walking and cycling infrastructure as well as the promotion of sustainable mobility.
"We are happy to support this initiative, as its goal of a climate-friendly, safer city with a high quality of life also corresponds to the concerns we have formulated in our sustainability strategy for the TU Dresden campus," says Professor Roswitha Böhm, Vice-Rector University Culture. "Around 50 percent of TUD members commute by bike or on foot, so safe cycling and walking routes are particularly important to us." In addition to the Environment Commission and the Student Council, transport experts at TU Dresden, including traffic psychologist Prof. Bernhard Schlag, as well as the TUD environmental initiative tuuwi, are also firmly committed to the walking and cycling initiative.
One of the most important goals of the public petition is "Vision Zero" - in future, there should be no more fatalities or serious injuries in road traffic. To achieve this, cycle paths and footpaths should be made safer and more comfortable, especially at intersections. The initiators also want more traffic-free zones, a pedestrian and cycling infrastructure that is suitable for children and senior citizens, more accessible paths, high-speed cycle paths and better parking facilities, as well as an upgrade of the Elbe cycle path.
The aim is to collect 30,000 signatures for the citizens' petition by May 2025. After that, the city council will have the opportunity to approve the petition. In case of a rejection, a referendum will follow. You can download the signature lists online and hand them in at the collection points that have already been set up in many places in Dresden - including on the TUD campus.
