35 Years of the TU Environmental Initiative - The Chronicle Is Here!

Since its founding in 1989, the TU Environmental Initiative (tuuwi) has brought together students, staff, and many others who are committed to environmental and climate protection, sustainability, and climate justice—both on the campus of TU Dresden (TUD) and far beyond.

To mark its 35th anniversary, tuuwi therefore undertook a special project: a chronicle of tuuwi from 1989 to 2024. Dedicated volunteers worked on this book for nearly four years—sometimes more intensively, sometimes less, and above all, on a volunteer basis. But it was worth it: The chronicle offers a journey through 35 years of commitment and activism on the TUD campus! Those involved quickly realized—it’s a bottomless pit. So many notes and (digital) folders in the archive, so many (former) tuuwi members and their memories, so many photos and other materials. The chronicle therefore makes no claim to completeness. Rather, it is an attempt to compile the most important (or rather, the best-documented) milestones, projects, and developments—and to highlight a few individual experiences as well.

The story actually begins in the former GDR. Even before the fall of the Berlin Wall, students and staff from various departments joined forces to work together for environmental protection—initially without a name of their own. From several initiatives, today’s tuuwi emerged, which continues to help shape campus life and advocates for a (more) sustainable university.
