Student Research Expo 2020 – digital
Despite the current situation the Student Research Expo 2020 will still take place. Again this year, student research projects will be acknowledged. Unfortunately, the regular Expo opening and poster exhibition has to be postponed for the time being. Instead, 20 students will present their research projects online. Therefore poster workshops took place in June/July. Starting in August, the posters and 90-s podcasts of the research projects will be available online here.
The opening will also happen digitally. With a small supporting program (e.g. keynote talk) the students present their projects via BigBlueButton. The public presentation will take place on September 1st from 5 pm.

Student research, that sounds a bit strange in first place, but nevertheless all students are doing it already during their studies: conduct research independently and discover new findings. It could be for example a thesis project, while working as a student assistant or within the scope of a student group.
Unfortunately, most of those research contributions are hardly ever read. For example, thesis projects are often graded and then disappear in a drawer or nowadays on a hard drive.
And exactly that we would like to change with the Student Research Expo! The Student Research Expo is an exhibition featuring student research projects, which is organized jointly by the Doctoral Council (also called Ddocs) and a number of further committed students every year. All participants have the opportunity to pitch their project within 90 seconds to the audience and have a chat with the visitors afterwards. The project is supported by both the Centre for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching and Directorate 7 for Strategy and Communication.
On the first Monday each month, the PhD student’s council is organizing the Science Beer event. Every time someone is presenting a research project within 10 to 20 minutes and afterwards there is time for questions and open exchange.
The Science Beer is thus a good opportunity to meet the DDocs, learn more about the Student Research Expo or to present your own research project.

The Student Research Expo 2018 took place on 4th of July 2018 being the first exhibition at TU Dresden dedicated solely to student research. On board we got about fourty participants from twenty-two different fields of study presenting their research projects to more than one hundred visitors at the central lecture hall.
The event kicked off with a keynote talk by Dr. Gerd Teepe, Director Marketing for Europe at Global Foundries, tackling „The Impact of Semiconductors on Society – next Chapter: Artificial Intelligence“. Afterwards, the fist twenty participants got the opportunity to pitch their project within ninety seconds to the audience. After a short coffee break the remaining projects were pitched in the second session.
Next, there was a one hour poster session, during which all visitors had the chance to talk to the participants in front of their posters. And finally, the event concluded with the award ceremony, whereby three jury awards and an audience award, worth 100,- Euro each, were handed over.
Thanks a lot for all the positive feedback and the support we have received. We are looking forward to organizing the Expo again in 2019!
