Major success for TUD in the latest “THE Impact Ranking”
In the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking 2024, TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD) has now made it into the top group in the sustainability category “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” after continuous improvement over the previous two years. TUD has once again improved on its already excellent results from 2023 and, in the current round of rankings, has achieved the maximum possible 100 points in this Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): (short SDG, German: Ziel für nachhaltige Entwicklung). At national level, TUD ranks among the top five universities in this category.
"The current results from 'THE Impact Ranking 2024', in which TU Dresden is in the top group in the category 'Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure' - one of the sustainability goals based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations - impressively show how much TUD has improved over the past few years, especially in the areas of transfer, start-up funding and industry relations. At the same time, this success also shows that we have made great progress towards our goals of strengthening knowledge and technology transfer and contributing to a more sustainable society, making us even more attractive to external cooperation partners and further strengthening the links between science, business and society", says Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden.
In the THE Impact Ranking,TUD's performance in research, transfer and third-party funding acquisition is rated in the SDG “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” category. This includes the number of TU Dresden research papers cited in patents and how many start-ups have been established. Another factor is the volume of third-party research funding the university received from industry.
Successful in acquiring external research funding and strong in discoveries
The particularly high level of third-party funding at TU Dresden and the outstanding number of patents have also been confirmed by other sources. According to the latest edition of the Funding Atlas of the German Research Foundation (DFG) TUD is one of the German universities receiving the most funding. In a recent study by the German Economic Institute TU Dresden ranks as the university with the most patents in Germany by a wide margin.
In addition, TU Dresden has created sustainable structures with the TUD|Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TUD|excite) under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart to support research-based innovation projects on their way to application, to explore and initiate strategic partnerships with companies, and to promote support for spin-offs as well as training and continuing education in all topics related to transfer.
