Web Page Quality Check
To help you ensure the quality of your web pages, we have compiled the most important criteria for you. You can use the following checklist to put your web pages to the test.
General quality standards
- Have you imported the correct version of your content to the correct language section (German text in the German section and English text in the English section)?
- Did you replace sample content (text, images) on the start and overview pages with your own content?
- Can site visitors find all the pages in the navigation bar? Pages should only be excluded from the navigation bar in exceptional cases, as this makes it more difficult to find them.
- Did you use inclusive language as per the current regulations (mainly relevant for gendered language in German, but also make sure to use inclusive pronouns in English!).
- Have you published all of the complete pages and made incomplete or obsolete content private (or deleted it)?
- Is the content also displayed properly on mobile devices? If you have a tablet or smartphone at your disposal, simply enter the URL and test it out. Some desktop browsers will also give you a preview mobile display via the shortcuts Ctrl + Shift + M (Windows) or Command + Shift + M (Mac).
Structure
- Is everything in the navigation structure spelled correctly?
- Is the navigation structure airtight and organized in a way that makes sense for your target audience?
- Have you used succinct, easy-to-understand navigation titles?
- Is the number of sub-items for a navigation point clear? We recommend 5 - 9 sub-items.
Page types and elements
- Have you split up long content pages with subheadings? Have you added a table of contents at the top of the page?
- Have you applied the correct hierarchy to your headings (with heading 2 higher up than heading 3, etc.)?
- Are the web pages logically structured and easy to read?
- Have you included news and dates using the correct modules in the WebCMS?
- Is contact information included as part of a contact box?
- Have you remembered to use link boxes for links and downloads?
- Have you checked to make sure that there are no bullet points or the like directly before links and downloads?
- Are important announcements displayed as notice boxes?
- Are lists of logos and social media logos set up in a logo box or social media box?
Images
- Are the correct portions of your selected pictures displayed as desired?
- Are the images sufficiently high in quality (not pixelated)?
- Have you correctly included the images’ copyright details?
- Are staff portraits up-to-date and have you discussed their publication with the photo subjects (acquired consent)?
Accessibility
Your web pages should be as accessible for all users as possible. Editors can support this effort by taking note of the following:
- Have tables been integrated properly and not misused for layout purposes? The basic structure of a web page should not be produced using tables. These are strictly for making content easier to process visually—for example, when comparing data.
- Is it contextually clear what the purpose of links are and where they lead web page visitors? This is particularly important for cases when web page visitors use screen readers to assist them in reading the text. Thus, the link text should not read “click here,” but rather something more like “display all messages.” You can find more information on the WebCMS help page on accessibility.
- Have you used the correct format for your headings?
- Have you formatted lists with the list function in the editor?
- Have you provided informative alternative text for all images used?
