Qualitative teaching evaluation (TAP)
Would you like individualized, valuable and qualitative feedback from your students?
A teaching analysis poll (TAP) offers insight into how your students view your course without hierarchical obstacles getting in the way.
How does a TAP work?
During your course (typically mid-semester), a qualified expert in university didactics will ask your students the following or similar questions:
- What is useful for learning in this course?
- What is a hindrance to learning in this course?
- What suggestions for improvements do the students have for the course?
Since the survey takes place in a safe space only among students, they are more likely to speak openly about relevant topics. At the same time, the university didactics expert can ask follow-up questions if something is unclear, create clusters and review whether an opinion is shared by the majority of students. The results will be discussed in a feedback session, as will options for advancing or refining your course.
How much time should you invest?
- Time for a preliminary meeting, if needed
- 45 minutes of one course session
- About 1 hour for the debriefing session
Who can take advantage?
The offer is aimed at all lecturers (including student lecturers) at the TUD.
What lecturers have to say about this method...
"With the help of the TAP, I received concrete feedback on the content and structure of my course, the learning atmosphere, examination performance and other important aspects, whereby my time expenditure for this evaluation remained manageable. In addition, potentials are focused on so that the results can flow directly into the further development of the course. I would definitely recommend the TAP and will continue to use it."
Dr. phil. Christian Müller, Research Associate at the Chair of Adult Education
“The TAP results were very helpful to me. They made my work easier and improved my teaching. Involving an independent evaluator led to more specific suggestions for improvement from the students than paper teaching evaluations do.”
Eugen Boos, research and teaching associate at the Chair of Machine Tools Development and Adaptive Controls
“I am pleased to have had the opportunity to view my course from this other perspective. Some aspects that the students addressed were in the back of my mind for a while. Now, I’m extremely motivated to approach them. And I wasn’t left on my own to interpret the results of the survey. The university didactics expert fed me even more ideas to support me. I also feel inspired to tackle more difficult areas. The TAP was like a little adventure.”
Sofie Röhrig, research and teaching associate at the Chair of Political Sciences with a focus on International Politics
"I had a very fruitful discussion with my students after the Teaching Analysis Poll that resulted in some easy-to-implement but hard-to-anticipate improvements in the course. I think doing the evaluation half-way on the semester is an excellent idea!"
Dr. Alejandro Tabas, Research Associate at the Chair of Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience
“I’m satisfied with the feedback I received and look forward to the response it gets. I look forward to the next session.”
Dr. Sebastian Störmer, Junior Professor of Business Administration, esp. Human Resources Management
