Description
The ‘Statistics for Social Sciences’ course is an essential unit in the first year of some social science degree programs. The whole team agreed it was important to make this subject, which students who are required to take it may see as objectionable, as lively and relevant as possible. We therefore put a lot of work into the preparation of this course, including obtaining a special licensed software for computer-based practicals, in which students could evaluate statistical case studies.
It was a particular challenge to translate both our (hopefully infectious) enthusiasm and our (in our opinion) successful course plan from on-site to remote-based learning for the summer semester. We were aware of how difficult the situation was for the students and of our responsibility to help them on their way towards continued success in their studies. We hope that we were able to bring a bit of certainty to uncertain times with our commitment, ideas and diverse range of learning opportunities.
