Student Survey
A claim of excellence in teaching means that the TU Dresden is obliged to orientate itself towards quality goals, which stem from the central ideas for teaching as well as out of the set of requirements for good teaching. In doing so, a maximum of transparency regarding study conditions is created and the quality can be substantially ensured and developed in the study programs. Student surveys provide an important basis of the evaluation. Since winter semester 2020/21, these take place as a university-wide annual online survey.
Content
A subject matter of the student surveys are the framework conditions of studying at the TU Dresden and in the study program itself. Students are asked to rate and critically assess:
- Quality of teaching, competence acquisition and qualification goals,
- Subject-specific content of the degree programs (e.g. teaching of professional skills, practical orientation, research orientation, interdisciplinarity, intercultural competencies, digitalization),
- Design and structure of the degree programs, modularization,
- Opportunities for internships and studies or stays abroad,
- Facilities and equipment,
- Study organization, ease of study, workload,
- Examination organization, examination volume,
- Actions to ensure the success of studies,
- Student participation
- Support and counseling,
- Culture and handling of diversity in the degree programms and finally
- An overall assessment of their satisfaction with the study program.
The results of the student surveys are used as input for the analyses of strengths and weaknesses when each study program is usually evaluated every eight years as part of the university' internal quality management system, so that it is possible to monitor the quality development of the study conditions on a permanent basis.
MODULE EVALUATION
Since the modularization of the study programs the modules have formed a new level of organization within the study programs. The number, scope, and design of the modules will be defined in the course of the development of the study programs and will be retained in the module descriptions. The distribution of the course credits in the planning of the study programs is simply determined. To which extent they are realistic is to be analyzed in the module evaluation. The “studyability” of the study program is therefore a central criteria of the accreditation of programs. The question here is whether the estimated amount of work per module is suitable according to the individual living and learning situations of the students. The experiences of the students in the modularized study programs and the estimations of the student workload will be documented in order to improve and further develop the course offerings. The module evaluation takes place as part of the student survey and if necessary, with additional surveys.

Sample questionnaires
A sample of the online questionnaire of the TU Dresden student survey will be available here soon.
In order to obtain valid evaluations of the students on the quality of studies and teaching even in small study programs, supplementary group discussions are conducted. Worksheets for the group discussions (pdf)
Up to the 2019/2020, the student survey was only carried out for those degree programs which were to be evaluated in the respective year as part of the quality management for teaching and learning. Samples of these degree program-specific questionnaires can be found here.
