Arlene Keizer, author of Black Subjects: Identity Formation in the Contemporary Narrative of Slavery, is professor of English and African American Studies at the University of California, Irvine. Her talk will explore the specific features of a black feminist postmodernism that has emerged in a variety of art-forms. Focusing on Suzan-Lori Parks’s play Venus, damali ayo’s performance-art piece Pan-handling for Reparations, and Kara Walker’s monumental installation A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby, Prof. Keizer will discuss how black feminist postmodernism addresses the uses of history—especially the history of slavery—in the present, as well as the special challenges of representing the black female body and the failure of many.
