Poster exhibition on papilionaceous plants / legumes
From June 8 to August 4, 2024, the Botanical Garden of TU Dresden is showing the poster exhibition "Of Bean, Peanut and Mimosa - Fabulous World of Fabaceae". It is a joint project of the botanical gardens in German-speaking countries that are organized in the Association of Botanical Gardens (VBG).
Whether shamrock, chickpea, licorice or soybean - we encounter legumes in our daily lives almost everywhere in the world. The species-rich plant family is used for a wide range of economic purposes. On a tour of the garden, 15 themed panels provide basic information and explain exciting individual aspects. How and why does the mimosa move? What symbioses do legumes form and how do we humans benefit from them? What danger does it pose when seeds of tropical legumes become "botanical jewels"? Of course, the posters also show the potential uses of the plants, such as protein-rich beans or indigo, which not only dyes textiles blue. When visiting the poster exhibition, it doesn't matter whether you have never had a closer look at legumes before or are already botanically versed: There is something for everyone!
The exhibition is complemented by 27 species profiles, which you will find throughout the grounds right next to the living plants. The range includes native wild and garden plants, but also decorative or food-producing exotic plants such as the powder puff bush (in Rainforest House 2), the African bambara pea (in the Teaching School Garden) or rooibos (in the Desert Plant House).
The accompanying brochure "Of bean, peanut and mimosa - fabulous Fabaceae" with all the fact sheets, themed panels and other articles is available on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for €12 from the Botanical Garden office.
The poster exhibition ends after the summer festival in the Botanical Garden, which invites you to visit on the last Sunday of the summer vacations with a varied family program.
