Important contacts for hydrogen research at the Research Training Group
The first Hydrogen Transfer Congress took place on April 18, 2023 at the Kulturbrauerei Berlin. Experts and decision-makers from science, politics and business met to discuss the opportunities and challenges of hydrogen technology. The focus was on knowledge transfer between energy parks, industry and science (see Trans4Real).
Among the participants at the congress was Benjamin Zettler, a doctoral student of the fourth Boysen-TU Dresden Research Training Group in Cluster F. He is working on the sub-project TP F5, which deals with the entrepreneurial effects of a hydrogen economy on the sustainability transformation of society.
In the morning, the individual energy parks presented themselves as real laboratories of the energy transition in a relaxed interview format. During the breaks, there was an opportunity to talk to the respective representatives.
In the search for a suitable reference energy park for the 4th RTG, Mr. Zettler established personal contacts with representatives of the energy parks. The reference to real laboratories offers decisive advantages. On the one hand, the accompanying research on ongoing projects addresses real challenges that arise. For another, the well-known "chicken-and-egg problem" of hydrogen scaling has already been analyzed. These energy parks were selected from over 400 project submissions across Europe because they combine supply, demand, infrastructure and regional development. The challenge for the 4th RTG is to create a real laboratory with a holistic horizon for its own research. Experiences from existing energy parks can be used to derive new projects for a better evaluation of hydrogen value chains.
In the afternoon, three different sessions were held on the topics of regulation, certification, and standardization; industry and value chains; and society and participation. In addition to economic and regulatory challenges, the acceptance and participation of the local population is crucial for the success of hydrogen technologies.
Overall, the Hydrogen Transfer Congress was a great success and showed that hydrogen technology can be an important component of the energy transition and the sustainability transformation of society.
