SoSe 25
The starting point for our work at the department is an appreciation of the existing, which forms the foundation on which we, as architects, build. Our work is always set within the context of a larger whole; thus, we see buildings less as objects and more as specific structures that are part of an organism, whether built or natural.
Based on these considerations, in the summer semester of 2025, we want to focus on the interior spaces of urban blocks. They offer potential for densification while minimizing the need for city expansion or additional infrastructure. Inner-city blocks present opportunities but also require a sensitive approach regarding residents' privacy and the lighting conditions of both interior and exterior spaces. The buildings within a block are often not visible from the street and are accessed through passageways or courtyards. They belong to an "inner world," and we are interested in exploring what this means for their architectural identity.
We want to examine the expression these buildings can have and whether they are designed as long-term structures or temporary installations. We will investigate how density and proximity can be achieved while ensuring a considerate approach to existing buildings. We envision a mix of small-scale public-use spaces combined with collective work and living forms that contribute to the identity of the neighborhood and, together with the outdoor spaces, create a vibrant spatial fabric.
The existing models of block structures in Halle from the previous semester will be reused. In an initial exercise, we will analyze references, followed by an exploration of spatial relationships through interior and structural models. The project will be carried out in pairs, and working in the studio spaces on Bamberger Straße is encouraged.
