Science map for German smart city research published
Smart city research is networking: a new interactive science map shows who is researching smart cities and communities in Germany. The WISSENSARCHITEKTUR - Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture (TU Dresden) is an active partner in this initiative.
The new interactive Smart City Science Map is the result of the meeting of the Smart City Science Network in June 2025 at HafenCity University Hamburg. For the first time, it shows which universities, chairs and research institutions in Germany are conducting research into smart and sustainable urban development - from data platforms to governance and participation.
The online platform currently bundles current topics, projects, publications and contacts from 41 smart city-related institutions throughout Germany. The Coordination and Transfer Office for Smart Cities Model Projects (KTS) and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) have collected and processed the underlying data via a nationwide survey. Regular updates are planned.
Users can filter in a targeted manner according to research areas and institutions and thus find research partners. This promotes cooperation, strengthens the transfer of knowledge for joint projects and connects science with municipalities.
