The institute introduces itself

The IBK, Institute of Building Climatology, houses the two chairs for
• Building Physics (Prof. Dr.-Ing. John Grunewald) and
• Building Services and Climate Responsive Architecture (Dr.-Ing. Peggy Freudenberg).
The institute’s premises are in the office building Zellescher Weg (BZW, institute management and offices) and within the Construction Research Center on Georg-Schumann-Straße since its foundation in January 2016. The IBK has three primary research focuses (building material research, software development, and transfer of knowledge) and teaches several courses of study, especially for prospective architects and civil engineers.

Key topics at a glance

Studies at IBK

Design and construction is an interdisciplinary process involving many areas of expertise. Generally, a basic understanding of all the involved fields is required for interdisciplinary communication. In that sense, education at IBK contributes to communication improvement in architecture and building sector. With that goal in mind, we try to realize our university’s motto ‘Knowledge builds bridges – education unites people’.

IBK's Staff

Employing about 30 staff members, PhD students and guest scientists, IBK is the biggest institute within the faculty of architecture at TU Dresden. Our institute covers a broad spectrum of research and education. Main areas are laboratory reasearch on construction materials and systems, modeling of building physical processes, software development and engineering services.

Software development

The IBK develops software for building physics applicable for research, education and services offerings such as technical expertises. We provide physical calculation algorithms and models through user-friendly interfaces. Our main products are DELPHIN (simulation tool for transient heat and moisture transport in building components), COND (software for the evaluation of condensation risk and drying-out behavior for building components) and THERAKLES (software for transient thermal behavior of individual building zones).

The IBK activities

Our institute teaches students, among others, prospective architects and civil engineers. We provide lectures like “Building Climatology for Architects I and II”, “Building Physics for Civil Engineers”, “Energetically Optimized Buildings”, “Software Applications for Building Physics” and more. Additionally we offer advice to architecture students on their designs concerning our areas of expertise. Further information can be found under the tab “Education”.

The tab “Research” reports on our current and completed research projects as well as current and completed diploma thesis’ and dissertations. Furthermore we gladly like to inform you about our range of service in the following sectors:

Laboratory (measurement of storage and transport properties of building materials and development of those),
Software (conception of new and development of consisting software applications)
Transfer of knowledge (application and advancement of our laboratory’s and software development’s findings concerning challenging projects).
