The Alumna of the Month is an expert in Landscape Architecture
Dr. Wiebke Klemm has always felt an affinity for nature and the surrounding landscape. But she also wanted to be creative and positively influence people’s living space. Since completing her doctorate, the landscape architect has been working and living in the Netherlands for many years now.
As an expert on sustainable urban development, she is in high demand and focuses a lot of her attention on topics such as climate adaptation and green infrastructure. She also heads the European Nature Smart Cities project, with the aim of transforming a public square into an attractive and climate-focused neighborhood park in the socially disadvantaged district of Laak. Rainwater from surrounding streets and roofs is collected locally, filtered, and stored in case of droughts. In the summer, when it gets hot, the water can be used to irrigate the vegetation of the urban farm and vegetable garden in the park.
