Invitation to the Hoyerswerda Summer School from August 11th - 17th (Modules LM 322/ LM342)
Summer School Ecological Urban Transformation in Regional Structural Change
11-17 August 2024 Hoyerswerda
The background: Hoyerswerda is one of the largest New Towns in East Germany built in the 1960ies and 1970ies. After 1990 and the decline of coal mining and processing, the city has seen a dramatic loss of population, urban functions and identity. Today, the city is daring to make a new start and is combining ecological urban transformation with the goal of sustainability and revitalisation within a participatory process. Your ideas are needed here!
The task: We are seeking for interdisciplinary, creative, and analytically sound contributions to implement innovative approaches for ecological revitalisation, climate protection and adaptation, as well as – where appropriate – urban farming into the existing built environment of a shrinking city.
Solutions should integrate participation of the local residents and communities thereby enhancing and discussing acceptance. They might explore planting (be it agricultural or amenity planting) as a driver of climate protection and melioration as well as biodiversity. The student works should be visualised and exhibitable. Furthermore, we expect the status of planning in the city to be taken into account. At the moment, there is the idea of a KlimaCampus, whereby a vacant school, an old planetarium and the surrounding open space are to be transformed into a pilot site for participatory ecological urban transformation that will have an impact on the city and the region. We suggest taking this place as a starting point to look at the surrounding neighbourhood, the city as a whole and urban-regional interrelations.
The offer: You will have the opportunity to work in mixed, interdisciplinary teams of 4 students and will be supervised by academics from different disciplines as well as by practitioners of urban and regional development. Your results will be presented to local and regional decision makers, exhibited in the city and incorporated into the urban development process.
