Doctorate Studies at the Faculty of Architecture
The Faculty of Architecture and Landscape confers the academic degrees of Doctor of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy on the basis of doctorate proceedings. If you are interested in a doctorate at the Faculty of Architecture, you should:
- work on a topic within an area which is represented at the faculty by a higher education lecturer or TUD Young Investigators
- he or she shall be the academic supervisor of your dissertation

Prerequisites and Aptitude Test
The admission requirements are based on §6 of the doctoral regulations of the Faculty of Architecture:
You will be admitted to the doctorate proceedings if you have obtained
a) a Diplom, Master's or Magister degree from a higher education institution, or the state examination in a course of study relevant to the field of the doctorate proceedings, with an overall grade of at least "good",
b) a Diplom, Master's or Magister degree from a higher education institution or the state examination in a course of study relevant to the field of the doctorate proceedings with the overall mark "satisfactory", or one of the above qualifications in a course of study not related to the field of the doctorate proceedings with at least the overall mark "good", and if you have passed the aptitude test in accordance with § 7.
You will also be admitted to the doctorate proceedings if you have obtained a Bachelor's degree from a higher education institution with the overall grade "very good" and passed the aptitude test in accordance with § 7.
Graduates of the University of Applied Sciences can be admitted in a cooperative procedure.
The conditions for the aptitude test are regulated in §7 of the doctoral regulations:
Candidates who, according to the provisions of the doctoral regulations, can only be admitted to the doctorate proceedings on the basis of a positive aptitude test, must complete a relevant, freely selectable specialisation module of the Diplom degree course in Architecture (8 CP) or specialisation project of the Master´s degree course in Landscape Architecture (12 CP) and attain at least the grade "good". Further information is available from the responsible higher education lecturer.

Admission as a Doctoral Candidate
You can apply for admission as a doctoral candidate online via the online system Promovendus.
Please submit the following documents together with your application:
- Certified copy and, if applicable, translation in German or English of the graduation certificate of the study degree relevant for admission
- Certified copy and, if applicable, translation in German or English of the overviews of subjects and grades of the study degree relevant for admission
- Certified copy and, if applicable, translation in German or English of all other study graduation certificates and overviews of subjects
- simple copy of the certificate of general higher education entrance qualification (as a rule Abitur)
- exposé of the doctoral project
- schedule of the doctoral project
- copy of the supervision agreement concluded with the competent and responsible higher education lecturer of the faculty and, in the case of a cooperative procedure, the lecturer of the university of applied sciences
- current curriculum vitae (CV) with academic track record, if applicable, list of publications and signature
- documentary evidence of additional studies or exams already completed in officially certified form
- written evidence (receipt) that a Clearance Certificate (Criminal record Certificate), which is to be sent to the faculty according to § 30 para. 5 of the Federal Central Criminal Register Act (BZRG), has been applied for at the responsible registration authority.

Promovendus
The doctoral candidate management system "Promovendus" processes all stages of doctorate proceedures - from admission into the doctoral candidates´list to the defence. Via Promovendus, you can register for the doctoral candidates´list, submit an application for the opening of the doctoral programme and receive information on the status of the doctorate proceedings.
All doctoral candidates who have already been enrolled in the doctoral candidates´list of the Faculty of Architecture will automatically be transferred to Promovendus.
With immediate effect, new enrolments are only possible via the Promovendus portal. Further information

Enrolment for the Doctoral Programme
Every doctoral candidate is free to enrol as a doctoral student for the limited period of time in which the doctoral thesis is being prepared according to § 16 of the regulations for enrolment. The prerequisite is successful admission to the doctoral candidates´list of the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape. With your enrolment, you acquire the status of a doctoral student and are obliged to re-register for each semester by transferring the semester fee. Like all other students, you will then receive a student identity card with a semester ticket. Registration and enrolment for the doctoral programme is done online.

Opening the doctorate proceedings
You can apply to open the doctorate proceedings online via the online system Promovendus.
Please submit the following documents together with your application:
- 6 copies of the dissertation (bound, typewritten, A4) in German or English
- 1 electronic copy of the dissertation (CD, USB stick or memory card). The following formats are accepted: MS Word, Word Perfect, RTF, PDF, PostScript, HTML, plain text format. The maximum file size is 20 MB, for pure text files 2 MB.
- 15 copies of the summary (1-2 pages)
- current curriculum vitae (CV) with academic track record and signature
- list of publications
- documentary evidence of the fulfilment of the requirements made at the time of admission as a doctoral candidate (if applicable)
- evidence of completion of additional or supplementary studies (if applicable)
- written evidence (receipt) that a Clearance Certificate (Criminal Record Certificate), which is to be sent to the faculty according to § 30 para. 5 of the Federal Central Criminal Register Act (BZRG), has been applied for at the responsible registration authority.

Clearance Certificate (criminal record certificate)
In order to apply for admission as a doctoral candidate and for opening the doctorate proceedings, you require written evidence (receipt) that a Clearance Certificate (Criminal Record Certificate), which is to be sent to the faculty, has been applied for at the responsible registration office or at the Federal Office of Justice according to §30, para. 5 BZRG. The Clearance Certificate is valid for approx. 3 months and can be applied for on the day of submission of the documents for admission as a doctoral candidate or for opening the doctorate proceedings. When applying for a Clearance Certificate (e.g. at the Central City Office, Theaterstrasse 11, 01067 Dresden), the following recipient address must be provided:
