CHAIR PROFILE
The Chair of structural design forms a link between the faculties of architecture and civil engineering. The aim is to convey a holistic design approach and the interplay between materialized structure and architectural idea.
TEACHING, RESEARCH, CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE
These three areas are covered by the Chair of Structural Design:
Teaching as a cornerstone
The teaching at the professorship is concerned with the fundamentals of structural design and analysis, with related topics on special and lightweight structures and with questions of conservation and retrofitting. In addition, the Chair offers courses on construction design and construction supervision.
Participation in research
Several third-party funded projects are being carried out at the Chair of Structural Design, some of them internationally. In order to introduce students to the latest developments and to scientific working methods, the Chair strives to strengthen the contact between students and staff in research, e.g. by linking topics for written papers to current projects or by direct assignments.
Experiencing architectural practice
The direct experience of construction sites and working on the preservation of buildings introduces students to the practical side of their career. For this purpose, the Chair offers excursions linked to the lecture series, as well as optional activities such as the building summer. Here, young people in training or at the beginning of their working life are given the opportunity to participate in the safeguarding of monuments of historical significance.
