INVITATION TO THE KICK-OFF OF "Pic2Bridge"
Bildbasiertes Ingenieur-Design für Brücken – Pic2Bridge
Pic2Bridge: Advancing Bridge Design Through Innovative Image-Based 3D Modeling Invitation to the Pic2Bridge project kick-off, live-streamed on November 12
Bridges are essential components of our infrastructure, providing crucial connections across natural obstacles and linking regions and communities. They facilitate the movement of goods, services, and people, thus playing a significant role in social and economic integration. Traditionally, bridge design has relied on the individual knowledge and experience of engineers. While this approach benefits from specialized expertise, it can lead to significant variations in quality. Moreover, efficient methods for analyzing existing bridge structures using freely accessible data sources, such as images, are currently lacking.
To address these challenges, the Institute of Concrete Structures at Technical University Dresden (TUD) is launching the new research project "Bildbasiertes Ingenieur-Design für Brücken" (Image-Based Engineering Design for Bridges). This project aims to revolutionize bridge design by employing Structure from Motion (SfM) technology to create detailed 3D models from a limited number of open-access 2D images. This method automates the analysis and reconstruction of bridge structure models.
Now, the joint research project “Pic2Bridge - Image-Based Engineering Design for Bridges” has been launched with the participation of Technical University Dresden (TUD). The project is scheduled to run from 01.08.2024 to 31.07.2025 and will be funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) with around 164.000 euros as part of the mFUND innovation initiative. The Pic2Bridge project is dedicated to explore the feasibility of creating detailed 3D reconstructions of bridges using a limited number of images. This innovative approach leverages publicly available data sources and integrates systematic data collection with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies. By doing so, Pic2Bridge aims to establish a more objective and comprehensive foundation for bridge design. This approach enhances both the accuracy and consistency of 3D models, providing a deeper understanding of bridge design and the various factors that influence it. The project seeks to address traditional challenges in bridge design by ensuring a higher level of precision and reliability throughout the design process. Ultimately, Pic2Bridge aims to improve the overall quality of bridge design and provide more robust data for future engineering projects.
The Institute of Concrete Structures at TUD is leading the interdisciplinary project consortium. Key partners in the consortium include Fraunhofer IPM and Fokus GmbH.
