Institute of Geotechnical Engineering at the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE)
Immediately following the 8th International Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference, the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE)took place inVienna from June 14 to June 19, 2026.
This conference is organized every four years by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering at various international locations and is considered the most important and comprehensive event in the geotechnical community.

Under the motto“Where it all began,” the 2026 World Congress returned to Vienna, the historic birthplace of modern soil mechanics. It was here that Karl Terzaghi published his groundbreaking work *“Soil Mechanics Based on Soil Physics”* in 1925, thereby laying the foundation for modern soil mechanics.

Our colleagues Metehan Karslioglu, Sebastian Ullmann, and Prof. Ivo Herle attended the conference and actively participated with their own presentations and poster presentations. This allowed us to present our research in an international context and receive valuable feedback from the professional community.

In addition, the conference was marked by an intensive professional exchange with researchers and industry partners from around the world. The numerous presentations and discussions on current developments in geotechnical engineering provided a wide range of new insights and also offered the opportunity to establish new contacts.
