IBB spring excursion 2024

The traditional spring excursion of the Institute of Construction Management took place from 27 to 29 May 2024. During these three days, 38 students from the Construction Management and Building Energy Management specialisations as well as from the Industrial Engineering and Management degree programme were able to visit a variety of construction projects in Frankfurt a.M. with a focus on infrastructure construction, industrial construction and bridge construction.

On the way from the institute in Dresden to the excursion destination, the students were able to visit the Linde logistics centre construction project in Aschaffenburg. The project is being realised by the company Köster GmbH and comprises both the renovation of an existing building and the construction of a new hall complex. An interesting feature of the project is the partially completed hall, which the customer is already using to store goods. This presents the construction management with the challenge that no partial acceptance of the construction work is possible. However, in order to ensure a clear demarcation of the construction phases, the condition of the structures is continuously documented.

The next morning started in Darmstadt at the mega construction project FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the largest construction projects for international cutting-edge research. Here, the students were able to gain an insight into a construction project that is unique in its complexity. We visited numerous highly specialised building structures of the total of 25 buildings, all of which require exceptional skills from those involved in the project.

In the afternoon, a crossing structure of the "Regionaltangente West (RTW)" in the Neu-Isenburg district, which is being realised by Wayss & Freytag, was visited. The special feature of this infrastructure project is that it crosses under 9 railway tracks and involves work during ongoing railway operations. The aim of the overall "Regionaltangente West (RTW)" project is to directly connect the Hochtaunus district, the Main-Taunus district, Frankfurt Höchst, Frankfurt am Main airport and the Offenbach district with a new suburban railway.

On the third day of the spring excursion, the students were able to visit the construction site of the Saale valley crossing as part of the Bad Kösen bypass. The construction project is being realised by STRABAG AG's Bridge Construction Directorate and was necessary in order to cope with the increased volume of traffic on the B85 towards Naumburg. The bridge is being built using a hybrid construction method. The edge spans are being constructed as steel composite box girders and positioned using the incremental launching method. The two main spans consist of prestressed concrete box girders and will be constructed using the cantilever method. The total length of the bridge is 1200 metres and has a continuous gradient of 6%. In order to integrate the bridge into the landscape as elegantly as possible despite its size, it was designed to be simple and slender.
