Abstract:
This paper presents the current state of RFID technology in construction. The focus is on an overview of the development of RFID hardware and the established applications of RFID technology in construction. In addition, development potentials are shown. An overview summarises the current RFID hardware from the point of view of technological specifications. The results show that RFID hardware is constantly being developed further and that the costs for the hardware have decreased significantly; while the functionality has increased. With regard to the established applications of RFID technology in the construction industry, the identification and tracking of people and operating equipment is mainly implemented. The application of RFID technology increases the density of information flow in construction projects and thus contributes to the optimisation of construction site management. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the difficulties in the implementation of RFID in construction are mainly due to the low acceptance of the new technology by construction companies and not due to the lack of demand for RFID hardware.
