Abstract:
In the context of the thesis, the causes for the premature deconstruction of buildings are dealt with. First of all, general principles such as service life or types of use are defined. The building demolition statistics are also evaluated in this context. Based on this, the current and past utilisation requirements of residential and office buildings could be shown against the background of constructional, social and economic developments. With the knowledge gained, various building characteristics were categorised. In combination with the statistically recorded causes of deconstruction, further reasons for building demolition were developed. In the area of residential buildings, the replacement of existing buildings emerges as a defining motive for action, whereas in the case of office buildings it is above all the location-specific characteristics and the adaptability to new requirements that are decisive. However, the explanatory approaches are limited in their informative value due to the limited data availability and little existing specialist literature.
