Abstract:
In this paper, the topic of rooftop farms and their inclusion in urban agriculture is explained. The focus is on the development of urban agriculture and its importance in creating an environmentally friendly city. The history of UL and its development over time up to the rooftop farms was also addressed in this study. At the end of the first part, all the stakeholders of UL were listed and explained in detail. The different types of urban agriculture were also considered and grouped into four main types: Commercial, Service-oriented, Non-commercial and Mixed urban agriculture. Subsequently, the different rooftop farm concepts were presented as well as explained. The aim of this paper is to compare the different concepts based on criteria such as environmental, economic and social.
The construction and planning of the rooftop farm is also accompanied by numerous obstacles that inhibit its introduction in Germany. The various obstacles were then identified and classified according to their nature. The last part provides a clear and precise guideline for the planning as well as the construction of a rooftop farm. All relevant aspects from planning to implementation of the concept have been considered.
