Abstract:
Climate change and the increasing global demand for energy and raw materials are fuelling awareness of sustainability. In the building sector, sustainability is focussed on an increasing number of approaches for ecological and resource-saving construction and operation. In addition to conventional construction methods, alternative construction and design approaches have also become established. For example, the general public is aware of green roofs and façades as an additional ecological contribution during the utilisation phase. The aim of this thesis is to analyse green facades and roofs with regard to their ecological, economic and social potential. At the beginning of the thesis, the different types and designs of building greening are explained, including realised projects, and the status quo in Germany is shown. The extent to which greening as a ‘climate adaptation measure’ can have an impact at building and city level is discussed. In particular, interactions between green and blue infrastructure (green and water systems) and compatibility with other systems, such as photovoltaics, were considered as part of holistic building concepts. Based on this, economic effects were identified and compared with conventional measures. Finally, possible control instruments, such as funding opportunities for the establishment of green roofs and façades, were identified.
