Abstract:
This article presents a structural, organisational and technical approach to the reuse of construction products (ReUse) for a circular construction industry. The potential of ReUse for conserving resources and decarbonising the construction industry is immense. The sector is organised almost exclusively along linear lines and is therefore not prepared for the use of ReUse. Consequently, established building component exchanges and digital platforms for the reuse of building products are analysed on the basis of defined criteria for the cities of Bremen, Gronau, Herzogenrath and Hanover, as well as for the platforms Concular, Restado and Bauteilnetz Deutschland.
These findings can be applied to the building component exchanges in the Dresden region to design a digital ReUse materials catalogue. In the ReUse materials catalogue, building components are recorded according to their origin, condition, ease of dismantling and the environmental impacts they have caused to date. The ReUse materials catalogue links these facts to planning-related recommendations for action. Based on this materials catalogue, a tiny house is designed in line with the principles of the circular economy. As part of this design process, a project-specific selection of materials is made, and procurement, dismantling and assembly instructions for the tiny house are developed.
The reason why insufficient quantities of reused materials are processed in a repurposed or regenerative manner within the construction sector appears to be attributable to a lack of regulatory frameworks for the processing of reused materials, a lack of transparency, and the absence of standardised quality assurance for reused building materials. This project aims to support the teaching of the ‘Circular Design and Construction’ course for students at TU Dresden through the practical application of a planning tool for the Dresden region, and to serve as a good example of circular design.
