Abstract:
This thesis examines dismantling technologies that enable suitable
timber components from existing buildings to be recovered in a way that preserves the material and ensures they remain suitable for reuse. To this end, the study first considers the material-specific and technical requirements, as well as the necessary requirements for site surveys and site conditions. Consequently, the
careful dismantling, cutting away from connection points, the lifting-assisted
recovery of interconnected component assemblies, and mechanical selective
demolition using a grapple are explained. These are then evaluated in terms of material preservation, reusability, as well as economic efficiency, cost implications and impact on the schedule. Building on this, potential for technical and logistical optimisation is highlighted. The results show that no single demolition technology is suitable for any given building; rather, success is achieved through a tailored combination of methods. In this way, the existing potential for reusing timber components can be better exploited in future.
