As part of the module โBIW4-21 - Building in Existing Structures โ Rehabilitation Methods and Materialsโ, civil engineering students took part in an excursion to several deteriorating and structurally compromised bridges across Saxony. The goal was to gain firsthand insight into typical structural damage, inspection techniques, and the consequences of insufficient structural assessments as well as possible rehabilitation measures.
The tour included a range of bridges incl. reinforced concrete and steel bridges with an age over up to 100 years with various types of damage โ from cracks and spalling concrete to visible corrosion. Accompanied by Dr.-Ing. Steffen Mรผller from Landesamt fรผr Straรenbau und Verkehr (LASuV), students observed real-life structural inspections and identified the specific rehabilitation needs of each site.
This field trip provided a valuable opportunity for practical learning and highlighted the critical importance of regular inspections and proper maintenance in ensuring the safety and longevity of infrastructure.
